IB Elects Two New Board Members PDF Print E-mail

The conference ministers elected two new board members at the annual meeting in Florida. Reverend Dr. John R Deckenback, the Conference Minister of the United Church of Christ Central Atlantic Conference; and Reverend Judy R. Fletcher, Executive of the Presbyterian Church (USA) Synod of the Sun.

Rev. Fletcher’s position on the Board marks an historic event for the Insurance Board (IB). In June of 2009, the Insurance Board welcomed a third denomination to the program: Presbyterian Church (USA). Rev Fletcher represents the PCUSA denomination, and will assist the IB as it grows in relationship with the Presbyterians. “Rev. Fletcher will be an asset to the program and she was an obvious choice,” said IB President and CEO Cathy Green. “Judy has written publications and materials for the Presbyterians, Lutherans, and the United Church of Christ, and she has served as keynote, director, and preacher for conferences at every governing body level across the denomination,” Green added.

Rev. Fletcher began her work as Executive of the Synod of the Sun in March of 1998. When the IB opened its doors to the PCUSA denomination in 2009, Rev. Fletcher was key in securing an unbiased, third party evaluation of insurance programs for the Synod. The results of the assessment led the Synod to choose the IB as the best insurance solution for their needs.

Rev. Deckenback’s return to the Board is well timed. 2010 is the year the Insurance Board celebrates its 25
th year as an
organization. Rev. Deckenback was a pivotal person in establishing the business 25 years ago. “We have come a long way in 25 years, and accomplished much over the past year with the inclusion of the PCUSA denomination. I feel a positive momentum has begun and our directors and staff are all energized,” said Green.

Currently more than 3,400 UCC, Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and Presbyterian Church (USA) churches and related organizations are active participants in the IB program. And, according to Green, ”New business is up dramatically over levels seen in the past two years.” Green also informed the conference ministers that claims frequency and severity were favorable during 2009.

The conference ministers approved the 2009 audited consolidated financial statements (which include the United Church Insurance Company, captive insurance company for the IB).
